The "Pay As You Go" Model
Medicare Advantage is an excellent way to save on guaranteed monthly premiums, but it's important to understand how the networks operate.
Copays Instead of Premiums
Instead of paying a high premium to an insurance company every month just in case you get sick, you pay small copays ($10, $30, etc.) only when you actually visit the doctor.
HMO vs. PPO Networks
Advantage plans utilize networks. If you choose an HMO, you generally must use local, in-network doctors and get referrals for specialists. A PPO gives you more freedom to travel out-of-network for a higher copay.
The Safety Net (MOOP)
Unlike Original Medicare which leaves you exposed to 20% of massive hospital bills forever, every Advantage plan has a Maximum Out-of-Pocket (MOOP) limit. Once you hit it, you pay $0 for medical care for the rest of the year.
Medicare Advantage FAQs
Clear answers to help you navigate your healthcare options.
Is Medicare Advantage a scam? I see a lot of commercials.
No, it is not a scam. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a highly regulated, legitimate alternative to Original Medicare, approved by the federal government. Nearly 50% of all Medicare beneficiaries choose an Advantage plan. The aggressive TV commercials exist because private insurance companies compete fiercely for your enrollment.
If my premium is $0, how does the insurance company make money?
When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, the federal government pays the private insurance company a set fee every month to manage your care. The insurance company uses that government money to pay for your healthcare, cover their administrative costs, provide you with extra benefits (like dental), and generate a profit.
Can I switch back to Original Medicare if I don't like it?
Yes. You can switch plans or revert to Original Medicare during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 - Dec 7) or the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 - Mar 31). However, if you drop your MA plan and try to buy a Medigap policy later, you may be subject to medical underwriting and could be denied based on pre-existing conditions.
