How Dental Coverage Works
Most traditional dental PPO plans follow a simple 100/80/50 structure. Here is how your policy typically pays out for the care you need.
Preventative Care
You pay absolutely nothing out-of-pocket for standard maintenance. It encourages you to keep your teeth healthy.
- Exams & Routine Checkups
- Standard Cleanings (2x/year)
- Diagnostic X-Rays
Basic Procedures
The insurance company covers the vast majority of the cost for minor issues, leaving you with only a small 20% copay/coinsurance.
- Cavity Fillings (Silver/Composite)
- Simple Extractions
- Periodontal Maintenance
Major Services
For expensive restorative work, the insurance company splits the cost with you 50/50, slashing massive thousands-of-dollars bills in half.
- Crowns & Bridges
- Root Canals
- Dentures & Implants (on some plans)

Who Needs Private Dental?
Dental insurance is one of the few insurance products you are virtually guaranteed to use and benefit from every single year.
Retirees & Medicare Seniors
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) explicitly does NOT cover routine dental care, cleanings, fillings, or dentures. A standalone policy is a necessity for seniors.
Freelancers & Contractors
If you work for yourself and buy medical insurance through the ACA exchange, adult dental is often not included. You must buy it separately.
Families with Children
Kids require constant exams, sealants, cavity fillings, and often braces. A family plan drastically cuts the cost of raising healthy children.
Dental Insurance FAQs
Clear answers to help you navigate your oral health coverage.
What is a "Waiting Period" and how do I avoid it?
Insurance companies use waiting periods (often 6 to 12 months) so people don't buy a policy just to immediately get a $2,000 crown and cancel. Preventative care NEVER has a waiting period. If you currently have dental coverage and are just switching companies, most carriers will waive the waiting period completely.
What is the difference between a PPO and an HMO (DHMO)?
A Dental PPO (DPPO) gives you maximum flexibility. You can see any dentist you want, though staying in-network saves you the most money. A DHMO is usually cheaper, but you MUST use an assigned dentist from a very restricted network, and you need referrals for specialists.
Does this cover cosmetic dentistry?
Generally, no. Procedures deemed strictly cosmetic—such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers (unless medically necessary for restoration), and cosmetic bonding—are typically excluded from standard dental insurance policies.
