The Personal Auto Policy Trap
Many business owners try to save money by using personal auto insurance for business vehicles. When an accident happens, the claim is almost always denied. See why you need a commercial policy.

Do You Need Commercial Auto?
If you answer "Yes" to any of the following, your personal auto policy is likely insufficient.
Vehicle Ownership
Is the vehicle titled or registered in the name of an LLC, Corporation, or Partnership rather than your personal name?
Transporting Goods
Do you use the vehicle to transport goods, equipment, tools, or supplies to job sites or for delivery purposes?
Employee Drivers
Do your employees or non-family members ever drive the vehicle for any business-related tasks or errands?
Commercial Auto FAQs
Executive answers to keep your drivers and assets protected.
My employees drive their own cars. Am I liable?
Yes. If an employee causes an accident while running an errand for your business (like going to the bank or picking up supplies) in their personal car, your business can be sued. You need "Hired and Non-Owned Auto" (HNOA) coverage to protect your company from this massive liability gap.
Does Commercial Auto cover the tools inside my van?
Standard commercial auto insurance covers the vehicle itself and the liability if you cause an accident. It does NOT cover the valuable tools, equipment, or cargo inside the vehicle if they are stolen or destroyed. To cover the contents, you need to add an "Inland Marine" or Cargo coverage endorsement.
Is commercial auto insurance more expensive?
It is usually more expensive than a personal policy because the risks are higher, the vehicles are often heavier, and the liability limits provided are much larger (often $1M+). However, the cost of a denied claim on a personal policy far outweighs the premium difference.
